Seasons and Other Factors Affecting the Quality of Life of Asthmatic Children
[email protected]: To study the effect of seasons on the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of asthmatic children.
Methods: Four groups of asthmatic children 7 to 14 years old were recruited by pediatricians during each season of the year. Their HRQL was assessed by means of the Paediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (PAQLQ). Other factors surveyed were asthma severity, atopy, medical treatment, immunotherapy, obesity, parental smoking, and anti-allergic measures.
Results: The mean (SD) overall PAQLQ score was highest in summer at 6.2 (1.0) and lowest in autumn at 5.5 (1.2). The same trend was found for domains in summer and autumn, respectively: symptoms, 6.2 (1.0) vs 5.4 (1.4); emotions, 6.5 (0.8) vs 6.0 (1.0); and activities, 5.9 (1.4) vs 5.0 (1.5). Factors such as male gender (odds ratio [OR], 0.60; 95% confi dence interval [CI], 0.41–0.87), being on immunotherapy (OR, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.38–0.92), living in an urban environment (OR, 0.56; 0.33–0.93), and residing on the northern coast of Spain along the Bay of Biscay (OR, 0.56; 0.36-0.89) were independent protective factors against having a total PAQLQ score in the lower tertile. Conversely, being recruited in a primary care setting (OR, 1.55; 1.01–2.38) and having more severe asthma were risks for being in the lower tertile.
Conclusions: Irrespective of the severity of the disease, season has a significant influence on the HRQL of asthmatic [email protected]
Percepciones de la comunidad educativa de El Porvenir, Rionegro, Antioquia, sobre la importancia de los servicios ecosistémicos del río Negro
Esta investigación tiene como objetivo analizar los aprendizajes sobre los servicios ecosistémicos que ofrece el Río Negro (Antioquia) los cuales se han visto deteriorados por la contaminación ambiental. Los estudiantes del grado sexto de la Institución Educativa Concejo Municipal El Porvenir escucharon las historias de vida de una líder de la comunidad del barrio El Porvenir en relación a los servicios ecosistémicos, es por ello que nuestra investigación es de carácter cualitativa con un enfoque biográfico narrativo; para la recolección de datos utilizamos las técnicas de observación directa, entrevistas semiestructuradas, historias de vida y el Mapeo de Significados Personales (Personal Meaning Mapping). En la recolección de los datos se interpretaron algunas ideas que generan confusión en los estudiantes, limitando el concepto de servicios ecosistémicos únicamente a los componentes que integran un ecosistema, alterando la interpretación holística del concepto al que se alude. Es importante continuar con procesos de educación ambiental que permitan a los estudiantes reconocer los servicios ecosistémicos de los ríos. Del mismo modo, debemos continuar escuchando las historias de vida de las personas de la tercera edad para crear nuevos imaginarios que permitan una visión esperanzadora del futuro, en este caso la recuperación del Río Negro, Rionegro, Antioquia, Colombia
People with advanced cancer: the process of living well with awareness of dying
Literature suggests that it is possible to live well with advanced cancer but little is known about the process. In this article, we present a secondary analysis of experiences of living with advanced cancer (n = 22) that refines the theory of “Living Well with Chronic Illness” for a different context and population. The refined theory explains the experience of living well with advanced cancer illuminating a five-phase iterative process: struggling, accepting, living with advanced cancer, sharing the illness experience, and reconstructing life. These five phases revolve around the core concept of Awareness of Dying, which varied from awareness of the possibility of dying, to accepting the possibility of dying, to acceptance that “I am dying.” Awareness of Dying led to a focus on living well with advanced cancer and movement towards living a life rather than living an illness
Synchronization of multi-phase oscillators: An Axelrod-inspired model
Inspired by Axelrod's model of culture dissemination, we introduce and
analyze a model for a population of coupled oscillators where different levels
of synchronization can be assimilated to different degrees of cultural
organization. The state of each oscillator is represented by a set of phases,
and the interaction --which occurs between homologous phases-- is weighted by a
decreasing function of the distance between individual states. Both ordered
arrays and random networks are considered. We find that the transition between
synchronization and incoherent behaviour is mediated by a clustering regime
with rich organizational structure, where some of the phases of a given
oscillator can be synchronized to a certain cluster, while its other phases are
synchronized to different clusters.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Resonant x-ray diffraction study of the magnetoresistant perovskite Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3
We report a x-ray resonant diffraction study of the perovskite
Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3. At the Mn K-edge, this technique is sensitive to details of the
electronic structure of the Mn atoms. We discuss the resonant x-ray spectra
measured above and below the charge and orbital ordering phase transition
temperature (TCOO = 232 K), and present a detailed analysis of the energy and
polarization dependence of the resonant scattering. The analysis confirms that
the structural transition is a transition to an orbitally ordered phase in
which inequivalent Mn atoms are ordered in a CE-type pattern. The Mn atoms
differ mostly by their 3d orbital occupation. We find that the charge
disproportionation is incomplete, 3d^{3.5-\delta} and 3d^{3.5+\delta} with
\delta\ll0.5 . A revised CE-type model is considered in which there are two Mn
sublattices, each with partial e_{g} occupancy. One sublattice consists of Mn
atoms with the 3x^{2}-r^{2} or 3y^{2}-r^{2} orbitals partially occupied, the
other sublattice with the x^{2}-y^{2} orbital partially occupied.Comment: 15 pages, 15 figure
Theory of spin wave excitations of metallic A-type antiferromagnetic manganites
The spin dynamic of the metallic A-type antiferromagnetic manganites is
studied. An effective nearest-neighbour Heisenberg spin wave dispersion is
derived from the double exchange model taking into account the superexchange
interaction between the core spins. The result of inelastic neutron scattering
experiment on is qualitatively reproduced.
Comparing theory with experimental data two main parameters of the model:
nearest-neighbour electron transfer amplitude and superexchange coupling

Estrogen and progesterone up-regulate glucose transporter expression in ZR-75-1 human breast cancer cells
Indexación: Scopus.Breast cancer incidence increases in women receiving combined estrogen and progesterone therapy. Breast tumors show increased expression of the glucose transporter GLUT1. We determined the effect of these hormones on GLUT1-4 expression and deoxyglucose transport in ZR-75-1 breast cancer cells. Immunoblotting, immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, and RT-PCR showed that GLUT1 expression is up-regulated by progesterone and, to a greater degree, combined therapy. GLUT2 expression is unaffected by hormonal treatment. GLUT3 protein and RNA is up-regulated by progesterone and combined therapy, and GLUT4 protein expression is up-regulated by all hormonal treatments. Deoxyglucose transport studies revealed the presence of three transport components with characteristics corresponding to GLUT1/4, GLUT2, and GLUT3. 17β-Estradiol produced a slight increase in transport at the Michaelis constant (Km) corresponding to GLUT3. Progesterone produced a small increase in transport at the Km corresponding to GLUT1/4, and combined 17β-estradiol and progesterone produced a small increase in transport at the Km corresponding to GLUT3 and a large increase in transport at the Km corresponding to GLUT1/4. This indicates that 17β-estradiol and progesterone differentially regulate GLUT1-4 expression and that these changes correlate to changes in glucose uptake. On the origin of neutron magnetic scattering in anti-site disordered Sr2FeMoO6 double perovskites
Anti-site disordering in Sr2FeMoO6 double perovskites (containing Mo atoms at
Fe positions, and viceversa) has recently been shown to have a dramatic
influence in their magnetic and magnetotransport properties. In the present
study, two polycrystalline Sr2FeMoO6 samples showing different degrees of
anti-site disorder (a nominally 'ordered' sample with 70% of cationic ordering
and a nominally 'disordered' sample with 18% of cationic ordering) have been
examined by magnetic measurements and neutron powder diffraction (NPD)
techniques in the 15-500K temperature range. Our main finding is that the
'disordered' sample exhibits a strong magnetic scattering (noticeable even at
500K), comparable to that displayed by the 'ordered' one below TC= 415 K. For
the 'disordered' sample, the magnetic scattering exhibited on low angle Bragg
positions, is not to be ascribed to a (non-existent) ferrimagnetic ordering:
our results suggest that it originates upon naturally-occurring groups of Fe
cations in which strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) Fe-O-Fe superexchange
interactions are promoted, similar to those existing in the LaFeO3 perovskite.
These Fe groups are not magnetically isolated, but coupled by virtue of Fe-O-Mo
AFM interactions, which maintain the long-range coherence of this AFM
structure. Susceptibility measurements confirm the presence of AFM interactions

One-step in vitro generation of ETV2-null pig embryos
Each year, tens of thousands of people worldwide die of end-stage organ failure due to the limited availability of organs for use in transplantation. To meet this clinical demand, one of the last frontiers of regenerative medicine is the generation of humanized organs in pigs from pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) via blastocyst complementation. For this, organ-disabled pig models are needed. As endothelial cells (ECs) play a critical role in xenotransplantation rejection in every organ, we aimed to produce hematoendothelial-disabled pig embryos targeting the master transcription factor ETV2 via CRISPR-Cas9-mediated genome modification. In this study, we designed five different guide RNAs (gRNAs) against the DNA-binding domain of the porcine ETV2 gene, which were tested on porcine fibroblasts in vitro. Four out of five guides showed cleavage capacity and, subsequently, these four guides were microinjected individually as ribonucleoprotein complexes (RNPs) into one-cell-stage porcine embryos. Next, we combined the two gRNAs that showed the highest targeting efficiency and microinjected them at higher concentrations. Under these conditions, we significantly improved the rate of biallelic mutation. Hence, here, we describe an efficient one-step method for the generation of hematoendothelial-disabled pig embryos via CRISPR-Cas9 microinjection in zygotes. This model could be used in experimentation related to the in vivo generation of humanized organs
